NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES IN MADAGASCAR
Growing challenge in the face of climate change and the strategic role of research

In Madagascar, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) represent a major challenge for the healthcare system. They are responsible for over 40% of deaths, affecting increasingly young populations and adding to the burden on an already fragile health system. Despite these alarming facts, interventions against NCDs have long been relegated to the background, with weak institutional coordination, chronic under-funding and a lack of exploitable local data for political decision-making.

In addition, the impacts of climate change, such as rising temperatures, food insecurity and the increased frequency of natural disasters, contribute indirectly to the spread of NCDs, by modifying diets, health behaviors and access to healthcare. These factors argue in favor of an integrated, systemic approach such as the “One Health” approach, which links human, animal and environmental health.

In this context, research plays a fundamental role. Not only does it provide a better understanding of the specific determinants of NCDs in the Malagasy context, it also identifies the most relevant levers for targeted, culturally adapted and effective interventions. It also offers an opportunity to strengthen partnerships between public, private, community and academic players, at both national and regional levels.

The response to NCDs in Madagascar therefore requires a strategic vision, reinforced coordination, sustainable resources and sustained support for operational research. Strengthening the healthcare system requires better integration of NCD prevention, strong political advocacy and greater resilience to the effects of climate change.
